4 serious service issues within 13 months
We bought this printer based on extensive research and on the recommendations of a leading consumer magazine.

We had trouble on two separate occasions with the ink cartridges "losing their minds" and deciding that they were empty when they were not. This problem "spread" from one cartridge to another, an issue verified by Canon. Although Canon replaced the offending cartridges in a timely manner both times, the printer will not print AT ALL without all cartridges working, so we were out for a couple of days or forced to buy new cartridges.

The print head also had to be replaced, requiring the unit to go to a local repair shop. One month after the one-year warranty was finished, the printer gave us another error message and would not print at all. The error message was not specifically covered on Canon's web site, but after going through extensive testing with the CSR at Canon, the printer was declared dead, and we were told that all Canon would do was to give us 15% off a new one since it was out of warranty.

We are most disappointed--the printer was really nice but it just did not work well enough and we don't believe that Canon stood behind their product as they should have. We will not buy another Canon despite their high ratings.

Refurbished but not tested?
I received the printer with a broken ink cartridge in the box, that should have been the first clue. Printer would not get past the set up returning an error about the "scan lock". Makes me wonder if they actually tested the printer before sending it back out again. If it hadn't been for the easy return policy I would have been very upset. Ended up buying a brand new Canon MP610 and had it up and running in a few minutes, very happy with it.

not too impressed
I have had this printer for just over a year. Conveniently just after the 1 yr warranty ran out last week, my printer no longer powers up. I tried different outlets and nothing so basically I spent $260 for the use of a printer for a year. Another thing I didn't like about it, is that it is very heavy. Just to move it from one spot to another was annoying (not that i moved it often). I guess when it was working, it worked fine. I only used it to print and scan so I can't speak for the other functions. It also seemed to take a very long time to get a scan started. I would have to hold the scan button down for some time before it kicked in. I wouldn't recommend. I have been trying to figure what I will be buying to replace this and unfortunately it seems Consumer Reports has the top three all-in-one printers as Canons. I"m not sure I am impressed with Canons.
That's my two cents worth or should I say $260 worth.

Awesome Printer
Being a graybeard, I have owned many computer printers since my first dot matrix, circa 1978. Until now, each one has vastly outperformed its predecessor. However, the performance of the Canon MP810 is so far beyond the performance of the Deskjet 870 it replaces that "vastly outperforms" is a gross understatement. What should be apparent from the Canon product description is that this printer does virtually anything one can imagine doing with a printer. Quick text? You got it. Stunning lab-quality digital photo prints? You got them. Scan and copy? Yup. What isn't apparent from the description is the amazingly robust construction, the virtual silence, and the reassuring ink efficiency of this superb quality machine. The controls look and feel like they belong on a high end audio component. There is no plastic-on-plastic "grinding and clacking"...just the silky-smooth sound of high quality, friction-free parts doing their work. And the ink cartridges, while not cheap, carry the machine a long way between fill-ups. In short, this is a spectacular product.

Not what I expected
The printer works good--quick. Scanner is good. The colors are not vibrant though. Everything is dull. We have tried a variety of papers and nothing seems to make any of the colors pop. We are considering looking into a laser printer instead.
